Greetings, friends. Over the past eight years I’ve had the pleasure of having conversations with an incredible group of designers for Helvetica, Objectified and Urbanized. But while each conversation might last two hours or more, we only get to use maybe two minutes of it in the film. So if you’ve watched my three documentaries, you’ve actually only seen 3% of the conversations we recorded. That means there are almost 100 hours of amazing interviews that we weren’t able to show you. So we’re going to release the full text of these interviews in a book! And we’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to make it happen. You can get all the details here.

In commemoration of the completion of the Design Trilogy (and that all three films had their NYC premiere at IFC Center) there will be special screenings of Helvetica and Objectified hosted by diretcor Gary Hustwit and guests from each film. See them in full high-definition and surround sound on the big screen! And all attendees will receive film freebies like buttons, tote bags, and whatever else we can find in the studio…

Our UK warehouse, on fire…
You’ve undoubtedly heard about the riots happening across England now. A few nights ago, in the London suburb of Enfield, rioters broke into the Sony DADC distribution warehouse, where we happen to store our DVD inventory, along with hundreds of other indie labels including Warp, 4AD, Domino, Matador, and Sub Pop. After looting what they could, the warehouse was set ablaze and subsequently burned to the ground.
Approximately 20,000 of our DVDs were lost in the fire, mostly copies of Helvetica and Objectified. Sony has assured us that they’re insured and we’ll be reimbursed, but that the process won’t start until the ashes stop smoldering (seriously!). We’ll be fine, but there may be a delay in shipping orders to stores and customers in the UK and Europe as we repress our stock. We’re hoping that the many independent labels that lost much more than us can get through this period as well.
Maybe it’s a good time to switch to all-digital releases?

Over a thousand people have backed our Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to help finish Urbanized. Thanks! We’ve got two weeks left, and we’re getting closer to our funding goal. But as with all Kickstarter projects, if we don’t meet that goal, we don’t get any of the funding. So if you haven’t already, please help us finish the film, you’ll get some sweet rewards!
Like the Design Film Trilogy limited-edition box set: definitive editions of Helvetica, Objectified, and Urbanized, plus a hardcover art book with notes, photos, and essays on the three films. Designed by Build, only 1,000 copies of this Trilogy box will be produced, and the only way to reserve a copy is through our Kickstarter campaign.
The other news is that we’ll be releasing exclusive video clips and soundtrack MP3s over the next few months as we’re finishing Urbanized. But these pre-release clips will only be available to our Kickstarter backers. So if you want to see and hear the film as it’s being finished, back the project!
UPDATE: Our Kickstarter campaign is now over, and we are not accepting pre-orders for the Design Film Trilogy. We’ll be offering a small number of the Trilogy boxes for sale at the end of 2011, so please get on our email list and we’ll keep you posted.
